Mechanical + Electrical Engineering

Quality, functionality and value through lean design

The environment for mechanical and electrical engineering is becoming ever more complex.
Growing demands for cost and energy efficiency mean there's a corresponding need to rationalise complexity and engineer value.

Lean engineering on traditional and high-tech projects

With a strong heritage in off-site, efficient design solutions are fundamental to the way we work. That means removing unnecessary complexity and finding the optimal solutions which marry cost-efficiency with building requirements. For example -

  • Minimising the space and intervention that mechanical and electrical engineering systems need
  • Reducing void and plant space
  • Reducing cost and programme
  • Simplifying logistical requirements
  • Optimising energy performance

On CircleReading Hospital, our Lean engineering system design and layout achieved a 14% reduction in carbon emissions, saving capital across the operation and maintenance of the building

Bringing data sets to life

Data is only as useful as it is useable, so we visualise large data sets into engineering solutions, making it easy for whole project teams and end users to engage with them. Visualised solutions also offer a fast, effective way to recalculate and test different options. These techniques allow us to optimise the design and strike the right balance between cost, performance and long term facilities management.

When designing hospitals, internationally, we take large amounts of per-room technical data and created an automatic visualisation of design and data activity.

Delivery is designed in, contractor-ready and procurement aligned

To ensure smooth delivery, we design our engineering with construction in mind – for example with logical distribution and a predictable systems approach. By using BIM and product design software through the entire life cycle of the building, we produce efficient solutions. That means they are directly implementable, with sufficient granularity and detail to align with your procurement strategy.

With live data extraction straight from our models, we can immediately see how a change in design will impact cost, so strategic decisions can be made with full knowledge of cost impact.

Inventively practical

With our background in offsite, delivery is always designed in, and we look for innovative, easily delivered ways to create efficiency. Our teams comprise analytical, and creative, people who root innovation in reality. They use advanced BIM to assemble complex, critical data into spatially co-ordinated models. These allow designs to be tested, which improves component fit, reduces co-ordination clashes on site and identifies facilities management solutions at design stage. And by writing “bolt-on” Revit applications, our engineers can cut the man hours spent on repetitive tasks, and solve key project issues.

For a large residential scheme, we created a bespoke software bolt-on which allowed us to size and allocate equipment across all the different rooms. It reduced the time needed to do the same task manually by 90%, freeing up man hours

We are experts in off-site engineering

With the need for off-site increasing, we are uniquely placed to deliver. With over 20 years' experience in the area, we know how to pinpoint the elements within a traditional approach that would benefit from off-site applications. More importantly still, we have the expertise to design and deliver them.

Sustainability and cost-effectiveness through lean design

Reducing resources means not just less cost, but less environmental impact as well. It's a dual benefit you can see in the use of our analysis tools to minimise energy use - in heating, mechanical ventilation and hot water, for example. Finding passive energy measures to enhance the internal environment, yields the same cost and sustainability benefits, as does intelligent selection of building materials.
