Bryden Wood contribute to Construction Leadership Council (CLC) report

Bryden Wood recently contributed to a report commissioned by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) to look at:

  • the labour model in the construction industry
  • the skills pressures and other constraints that limit housebuilding and infrastructure development in the UK

Published in October, ‘Modernise or Die: The Farmer Review of the UK Construction Labour Model’ provides a stark view of the current state of the construction industry, and a number of proposed areas for improvement.

The report lists low productivity, low predictability, a lack of collaboration and improvement culture and a lack of R&D and investment in innovation as being ‘critical symptoms of failure and poor performance’ in the industry.

The report goes on to make a number of recommendations for ‘creating long- term transformational change across such a complex and multi-faceted entity as the construction industry.’

The report features a number of exemplary case studies to ‘show what an aspirational, industry-wide level of behaviour or outcome might look like and to contrast this against current industry norms.’

‘Factory in a Box’, developed by Bryden Wood for GlaxoSmithKline, is the first of a case study in the report, cited as ‘embracing [‘lean’] thinking as a catalyst for process and productivity improvement’.

The report can be accessed here.
