Story

The stepped profile of the buildings allows for the formation of a cascade of ‘green’ roof spaces at differing levels, with biodiversity as a planting priority. The closed facades have been designed to have an extruded centre that will allow for sunlight to enter rooms, while not allowing direct overlooking. The proposed development incorporates many energy-saving features, including photovoltaic cells and ground source heat pumps. It also incorporates a range of measures to safeguard the most important ecological features and promote biodiversity.

In addition, the top-most roof of each building will be a ‘brown’ roof, specifically designed to encourage habitation by native wildlife. Access to the site is extremely limited, while extensive existing trees further constrain the construction site. As a result, the construction logistics and sequencing will need to be carefully planned. This will be undertaken through model studies and ‘virtual build’ exercises. In addition, the use of Design for Manufacture and Assembly for some of the major elements including frame and envelope will minimise the number of vehicle movements and removal of waste from site. This will also help to minimise the impact on existing trees and planting.
