We developed Churchwood Gardens as 71, sustainably focused, modern rental apartments, set amongst a peaceful garden space by Davis Landscape Architecture. The project for client Loromah Estates was designed to sit within the stepped, infill site and focuses around a sense of relaxation and fostering community. The buildings are sympathetic to neighbouring Victorian homes, carefully designed to preserve sightlines, street character, and provide privacy to residents. Red-timber cedar cladding enhances the urban garden feel, with all timber specified as legally harvested and traded. Site biodiversity is enhanced by a woodland floor landscape, living roofs, the preservation of bat flightpaths and a perimeter ‘dark corridor’ (protected by careful window and security light positioning).
Designed to the National Housing Federation’s good practice standards and London Plan requirements, spacious apartments fill with natural light from full-height windows, with light analysis conducted and the minimisation of air borne sound also addressed. Long lasting materials provide value, reduce additional costs and environmental impact. Environmentally conscious protocol has been prioritised: passive design measures, photovoltaic panels, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, attenuation tanks, built fabrics chosen for thermal performance, and the reduction of construction waste and embodied energy via off-site techniques and Modern Methods of Construction.
