Jaimie Johnston, Director, Head of Global Systems, Bryden Wood reacting to the budget said: “We welcome the £170m made available to fund innovation and productivity improvement in construction. Story

The Government spends billions on built assets – schools, hospitals, etc. Structurally a lot of these buildings are not that different. To become more efficient and to make design for manufacture processes cost effective we need to adopt a common approach so that we can provide volume. The Government’s thinking is in line with the work that Bryden Wood has been doing with public sector clients including MOJ, ESFA and Highways England.

We have devised strategies for both horizontal infrastructure projects – Data Driven Infrastructure: From digital tools to manufactured components and Delivery Platforms for Government Assets: Creating a marketplace for manufactured spaces, which focuses on buildings.”

Budget extract: 4.52 Construction – The government is taking a series of steps to improve the cost effectiveness, productivity and timeliness of infrastructure delivery. The government will use its purchasing power to drive adoption of modern methods of construction, such as offsite manufacturing. Building on progress made to date, the Department for Transport, the Department of Health, the Department for Education, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Defence will adopt a presumption in favour of offsite construction by 2019 across suitable capital programmes, where it represents best value for money.
