Gatwick Pier 1, a £186million airport facility housing a state of the art baggage and early bag store system with 5 passenger piers was opened in June 2016. Pier 1 is the largest redevelopment scheme to be undertaken at Gatwick since the change of ownership in 2009 .
The gross floor area of the new building is 25,000m2 with five new aircraft stands The new 'operationally excellent' facility, replaced the old pier building, originally opened by the Queen in 1958. BrydenWood were appointed as lead design consultants at Stage E to develop the scheme to construction stage.
The BrydenWood multidisciplinary team proposed design alterations resulting in significant efficiencies and benefits such as reducing the steelwork weight by 60%, optimising the building services distribution strategy thereby reducing the number of plantrooms, and improving the passenger experience by minimising the number of level changes. The new building interfaces with the existing south terminal facility to the North which remained operational throughout construction.
