Jaimie Johnston presented at The Construction News Summit – 22nd November, London

Jaimie Johnston, Architecture Board Director and Head of Global Systems at Bryden Wood, presented at The Construction News Summit as part of the Big Debate Stage, The Offsite Revolution. Now in its fifth year, The Construction News Summit is a unique gathering where delegates heard from government, public and private sector clients and industry leaders and discussed how to improve profit and productivity. The Summit, Chaired by BBC’s Andrew Neil featured the strongest line-up of any construction conference, with over 95+ speakers and 50+ public and private sector clients involved, including the chief executives of Heathrow, Network Rail, Telford Homes, Liv Group and Scape Group. The Construction News Summit connects main contractors and industry leaders with major clients and government to raise construction up the political agenda, explore future investment plans and discuss how the sector will develop in the medium term.

Jaimie presented a case study on Design for Manufacture (DfMA) and how the move to offsite affects the way that projects are designed, analysing how to ensure projects have a focus on offsite throughout the process, from design to construction, in order to drive benefits and quality. The presentation on Bryden Wood’s recent strategy documents  ‘Delivery Platforms for Government Assets: Creating a marketplace for manufactured spaces’ and ‘Data Driven Infrastructure: From digital tools to manufactured components’. These documents set out a strategy for developing standardised component solutions that could be applied to multiple building types which is very much in line with the recent Budget announcements that the major government departments will adopt a presumption in favour of offsite construction by 2019.

Jaimie also attended a round table masterclass titled ‘Construction 2020: Making the business case for offsite manufacturing stack up’. This session invited key industry figures to discuss which sectors are most suited to offsite, what contractors must do to embrace the revolution, and what challenges lie ahead for the supply chain and will be reported in in Construction News.
