A new edition of 'Delivery Platforms for Government Assets'

As the UK government prepares to mandate their adoption, we have produced a new edition of our 2017 book 'Delivery Platforms for Government Assets' that explains what platforms are.

The UK government’s Infrastructure and Projects Authority (the IPA) has just published Transforming Infrastructure Performance: Roadmap to 2030 – the latest step in their long-term programme for improving the delivery of UK infrastructure including, among other areas, the construction industry.

The Roadmap to 2030 includes the Government’s intention to mandate - in the next two years - the adoption of a platforms approach to design and construction for social infrastructure.

Jaimie Johnston MBE, Board Director at Bryden Wood, says, “I believe that mandating platforms will be the biggest change to hit the construction industry since the Government mandated the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in 2011, which also had a hugely positive impact on the sector.”

The platforms approach was conceived by Bryden Wood during our work with the Ministry of Justice in 2017. As a result of this work, the IPA asked Jaimie Johnston to write a briefing document outlining how Government could transform the sector, by applying the benefits of a manufacturing approach to construction.

We published that document, called Delivery Platforms for Government Assets: creating a marketplace for manufactured spaces, in 2017. This enormously influential publication has become the seminal work on platforms, and a guiding principle for government, policy makers, industry bodies and others – as evidenced in the 2017 Autumn Budget statement and the 2020 Construction Playbook, which laid out the UK government’s plans for the construction industry.

Its author, Jaimie Johnston, was awarded an MBE in 2021 for services to construction.

We are republishing the book now, with its original content largely unchanged, but in a new format, in order to help more people understand the theory, practice and industry-changing potential of platforms.

A platforms approach will help transform construction; to reduce carbon, increase efficiency, drive sustainability, improve quality and lower costs. The benefits to society as a whole will be enormous.

As the Roadmap to 2030 signals an imminent mandate for platforms, more and more people will need to know what they are and how they work.
