St. David's Hotel, Harlech

Story

St. David’s Hotel is a proposed scheme in Harlech, Wales which received initial planning approval in 2009 and comprises a 130 room five-star hotel and 76 self-contained holiday apartments. The development cost is estimated at £40 million. Bryden Wood were initially approached to rationalise the approved planning proposal. However, through this process a new streamlined design proposal emerged. The development will also include a conference centre, restaurants, bars, a spa and health club and golf shop. The building massing is influenced by a combination of the existing topography and by attempting to reduce interference with locally cherished viewpoints and vistas. The hotel element adopts the same site position as the existing derelict hotel infrastructure and, although the new proposal is of increased volume, the slopes progress from a single storey at the building’s northern tip to a high point of 7 storeys, reducing the impact of the massing on the view from the battlements of Harlech Castle while allowing the full scale of the development to be appreciated from the Royal St. David’s Golf Course.
